Black Rebel Nomads is…
A nonprofit organization devoted to creative cultural exchange through international travel. We provide opportunities for student artist to travel overseas and engage with other cultures to develop their cultural practice. We believe that cultural exchange can inform and provide new perspectives to student artist to expand their work. In addition to this, by providing creatives space from their day to day stressors we can provide them an ideal space to create life changing works.
Black Rebel Nomads was created in August 2022, by Alyssa Bigbee and Gaye Bigbee. After spending a month in the Philippines with a student worker, Alyssa was able to see how beneficial long-term travel was for student artists. That following year they launched their first Nomad application and received 10 applications from a variety of artistic disciplines from students. They selected two students to travel to Thailand where they spent a month in Bangkok & Phuket. Because of existing barriers to travel including finances, the organization covered their flights and board. During this time, they connected with other creatives based in Thailand and Nomads from the Philippine’s. In September of 2023, the organization achieved 501c(3) status and set out to achieve our mission as we prepare for 2024 journey to Indonesia.
In June 2024, the Black Rebel Nomads will take 1 youth artists to Bali for a 1 month to immerse in the culture and create a new piece of artwork (i.e. short film/music video/or other medium). Nomads will travel with Black Rebel Nomads team (Alyssa Bigbee and Dorien Harris) to local destinations to learn about the culture, traditions, people, food, and customs. Upon return from the journey, Nomads will produce a creative project and present it at The BRN Exhibition
