If you missed our virtual session that provided an overview of the program and tips on turning in a great application, check out the recording. We have provided some of the questions below that were asked.
Do I have to be enrolled in school to apply?
We at Black Rebel Nomads do not define student in a traditional way. For us, a student is someone who is pre-professional working on learning about their craft. We have had applicants who were on break from school or who weren’t enrolled in a university program. We’ve also had applicants who have started learning a new modality after mastering one form of art.
What expenses are covered in this program?
We cover Flights along with Room & Board. This includes your stay and also we provide two excursions and provide luggage if students don’t have any. Nomads will be responsible for their own spending money and food.
I’m a multi-hyphenate, what if I want to do multiple projects?
We recommend for your application to focus on one main project to present but we welcome Nomads to develop multiple projects. We’ve had students do a short film and photo series. Focus on highlighting one and then add more as you see fit.
I don’t have any existing portfolio, what should I do?
Please do not be shy or too humble about your work. If you have an instagram or tik Tok page that displays your art practice or even some things you have done for yourself. Please send that in with your application. If you are brand new, feel free to explain how this will help you start your practice.
What is the interview like?
The interview will be conducted by two of our board members who will ask questions about your interest and passion for your art and how it relates to the country. This should feel conversational so please don’t stress. Our board wants to get to know you and see how we can benefit you!
When is the project due?
Projects must be completed by September. We wanted to provide a period of reflection and rest to give you time to complete your project. The project will be displayed in the Rebel Return Exhibition.
Do I need to learn the language before traveling?
You are not required to learn the language. It is helpful and great to learn some words to get around and engage with people. Typically, we have came across English speakers or have used an app if one of our host Nomads aren’t around to guide us.
How do I deal with doing my hair on the trip?
Most Nomads wore a protective style to last the month but we have found through research that there will be groups of existing Black expats who can and will do hair as a service. We do recommend bringing your favorite hair products if you want to maintain or change your hair.
Is there a set itinerary?
Our BRN mentors and ambassadors will gave suggestions for destinations but Nomads are welcomed to create a schedule of their own. We encourage Nomads to even try one day of solo travel in the destination to have time for themselves. We also welcome days for rest in the room.
